I don't understand advocacy of the death penalty

That’s it in a nutshell. Now that Governor Tim Kaine placed a moratorium on the death penalty in Virginia pending a Supreme Court ruling, the Attorney General is worked up. It seems that Virgina death row inmates have the option of going out on the electric chair, so even if the Supreme Court rules lethal injection unconstitutional, the state can still zap inmates. Why the impatience to send even murderers to their deaths? I can understand impassioned opposition to the death penalty, but not even full hearted advocacy of it.
